For background, Chris helps schools through the evaluation process from when they first meet with the company, up until the point they become a customer. Veracross currently has five clients in New Zealand and are expecting to grow this over the second half of the year. Chris has noticed some changes in the market during the last five years, such as the impact of COVID which has led schools to become focused on ensuring continuity of operations through enhanced digital platforms for all users. He’s also noticed that security has been a consideration, with hacks, ransoms and data breaches becoming more common. Schools have looked to address these challenges in a range of ways, but certainly moving to the cloud has been significant. For some schools, enrolments and waitlists have become more competitive, and offering a premium experience for prospective parents has been important. In some areas, there have been significant challenges around staffing in schools, with staff wellbeing and burnout front of mind. Prioritising efficiencies in new systems has been seen as strategic.
Chris notes that security and compliance for schools is extremely important. Schools have very sensitive data around thousands of current/former students. Storing this information in a secure system is critical. He suggests that schools put supports in place to make the necessary changes, so they are technology and systems future-ready. He advises working with vendors that have strong commitments to support during the implementation phase, as well as ongoing support. Things like access to an online learning platform as part of the implementation should be a strong consideration.
