With a unique blend of experience in both business and education, Linda brings a practical, real-world lens to the teaching of mathematics鈥攁longside a deep passion for supporting every student鈥檚 learning journey.
Before transitioning to education in 2012, Linda built a successful career as an Accounting Manager in the manufacturing sector. She holds a Bachelor of Business Studies, a National Diploma in Business, a Diploma in Management, and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from the University of Auckland. Most recently, she taught in a Year 5/6 classroom at Titirangi Primary School in West Auckland, where she led both curriculum design and mathematics programmes.
Linda also held a leadership role as an 鈥楢cross School Teacher鈥 within her Kahui Ako鈥攁 collaborative community of teachers working across Years 1鈥13. 鈥淭hat experience really highlighted the power of sharing knowledge and working together to improve maths outcomes,鈥 she reflects. 鈥淚t reinforced my belief that collaboration between educators can transform how students experience and enjoy maths.鈥
Linda鈥檚 journey into teaching was inspired by her own son. 鈥淲e knew he was a little different. When he started school, he had a real knack for problem-solving, which placed him in a Year 6 maths class while still in Year 1,鈥 she recalls. 鈥淥bserving his teacher in that environment made me realise how much I wanted to be part of that world. I knew I could combine the financial knowledge I鈥檇 gained in my career with a passion for helping kids succeed and feel confident in maths. So, I took the leap and enrolled in teacher training the following year.鈥
Supporting Students and Teachers Alike
Linda鈥檚 love for maths started in her own school days, sparked initially by an interest in accounting. 鈥淲hen I began teaching, I realised my enthusiasm for maths was contagious鈥攁nd it鈥檚 only grown since then,鈥 she says.
Building on Dio鈥檚 already strong mathematics programme, the school employed Linda to further enhance and extend the opportunities available to both students and staff.
At Dio, Linda works closely with teachers to support lesson planning and delivery, while also providing targeted support and extension for students. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about ensuring teachers feel supported and confident, and giving students the chance to grow鈥攚hatever level they鈥檙e at.鈥
Her approach includes designing rich, real-world maths tasks for advanced learners that unfold over several sessions, encouraging deep exploration and problem-solving. For students who need extra support, her sessions focus on skill-building and confidence. 鈥淚 love helping students develop a growth mindset. They quickly learn to say, 鈥業 can鈥檛 do this鈥 yet.鈥 That one word, changes everything.鈥
Looking Ahead: Confidence, Challenge, and Financial Literacy
In her first term at Dio, Linda is already involved in existing initiatives such as the Maths Olympiad for Years 5鈥6 and is preparing students for the Mathex competitions in Term 3.Looking ahead, she plans to introduce new opportunities to inspire and engage Junior School students, including fun, school-wide activities during NZ Maths Week.
With financial literacy set to become a core part of the curriculum from Year 1 by 2027, Linda is eager to bring real-life concepts into the classroom. 鈥淭alking about spending, saving, and understanding needs versus wants fits naturally within maths lessons. It鈥檚 a great way to make learning meaningful and relevant.鈥
Linda鈥檚 vision for Junior School mathematics is clear and inspiring:
鈥淚 want every girl to feel confident and positive about maths鈥攁nd to look forward to learning it. That鈥檚 the foundation for everything.鈥
